Sports Minister to Attend CARICOM Conference

St. John’s, Antigua (4 February, 2005) – Sports Minister the Hon. John Maginley will join his regional counterparts in Barbados next week for the CARICOM Sports Ministers Conference to discuss a wide range of issues relating to the development of sports.
 
The conference which runs from February 11-12 is aimed at building regional goodwill through sports as well as to develop partnerships and strategies for sports ministries.
 
Minister Maginley says that the conference will outline preparations for the 2007 World Cup and will also examine international funding for the region’s sporting organisations and individuals and the CXC 2005 Physical Education syllabus.
 
He also stated that the CARICOM sports ministers will discuss regional co-operation on anti-doping and the World Anti-Doping Agency is expected to make a presentation during the conference.
 
Also down for discussion will be regional representation on international sports organisations, the development of a framework for cooperation between Ministers of Sports and the revival of the West Indies/CARICOM Games.
 
Representatives from Barbados, Bermuda, Montserrat, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St.Kitts/Nevis and the Bahamas are expected to attend the two day meeting.  The other CARICOM member states participating in the Sports Ministers Conference include St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize and Dominica.
